A tragic incident occurred on the Volta Lake in the East Gonja district, resulting in the deaths of nine individuals following a boat accident.
Two people remain unaccounted for.
The incident took place at approximately 5:30 pm on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, between Sikakope and Mataiko along the Yeji to Congo route.
The boat, which was carrying 14 passengers, capsized reportedly due to adverse weather conditions.
Rescue teams have recovered seven bodies, with one woman and one child still missing and presumed deceased.
No passengers wore life jackets when the accident occurred. Local emergency services are searching for remaining victims.
