The Ashanti Regional Police Command has initiated an intensive search for a gang of armed robbers following a violent ambush on the Ahyiresu—Kwame Dwumor Sreso road that left one person dead.
The attack, which took place late Sunday night, targeted a bus transporting members of the Berekum Chelsea football club.
According to a police statement, the incident occurred at approximately 10:30 pm in the Nyinahin District.
A VIP bus carrying thirty players and officials was travelling from Samreboi back to Berekum when it was intercepted by six armed men. Reports indicate that three of the assailants were wielding pump-action shotguns. In a desperate attempt to evade the gunmen, the driver lost control of the vehicle, causing it to skid off the road and into the bush.
The encounter turned fatal when Dominic Frimpong, a footballer with the club, sustained serious gunshot wounds. Although he was quickly transported to the Bibiani Government Hospital for emergency medical attention, he succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment.
Another passenger, 52-year-old George Owusu Afriyie, was robbed of GHS 4,500.00 during the ordeal.
Crime scene investigators recovered two spent BB cartridges at the site to aid their forensic enquiries. In response to the targeted attack, the Regional Police Command has deployed additional personnel and specialist units to the district to track down the suspects.
Deputy Superintendent of Police Godwin Ahianyo, Head of the Public Affairs Unit, has assured the public that every effort is being made to apprehend the perpetrators swiftly.
While the manhunt remains active, authorities have urged local residents to remain calm and maintain their cooperation with the police service as the investigation progresses.
