The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has formally accused the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government of systemic intimidation and a gross abuse of office.
The party alleges that the government has adopted a “Rambo-style” approach to governance since assuming leadership of the nation.
During a press conference held at the party’s headquarters in Accra, General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong asserted that the recent arrests of NPP officials by various security agencies serve as a clear indication that the NDC is regressing the country toward the era of military dictatorship.
He argued that the government has made it a central agenda to harass members of the “Elephant Family” since taking office in 2025.
Regarding these developments, Frimpong stated: “Some of the arrests and prosecutions of New Patriotic Party members are politically motivated and are orchestrated by the John Mahama-led administration.”
He further cautioned that the NDC should be prepared to “swallow the bitter pill” when the political tables turn in 2029, reminding the ruling party that no condition is permanent. He urged them to prepare for similar treatment when the NPP eventually returns to power and advised them not to complain when that time comes.
Stressing that the 1992 Constitution guarantees the rights of citizens to express their views, the General Secretary emphasized the necessity for these rights to be respected within the administration of justice. Addressing the press, he remarked: “These are serious and grave issues. Friends in the media, President Mahama must leave a desirable legacy. President Mahama is destroying our democratic credentials.
He called upon the media, civil society organizations, and the general public to remain vigilant in safeguarding the country’s democratic principles. Directing his comments to the Presidency, he added: “President Mahama, you are not tolerant. Why would you empower the police to be criminalizing free speech?”
In a supporting statement, the National Organizer of the opposition NPP, Henry Nana Boakye, also accused President John Mahama of undermining Ghana’s democratic stability.
He likened the recent arrests of NPP members by security operatives to the revolutionary eras where the military dominated national governance.
Mr Boakye declared that the NPP would not be intimidated by the recent perceived harassment from certain High Court judges.
Instead, he maintained that the party remains a united front dedicated to rescuing the country from what he described as “oppressive rule.”
Demanding judicial accountability, Boakye stated: “We also demand an immediate review of this perverse remand order. The Chief Justice must also investigate this clear case of apparent political bias on the bench.”
He pointed out that high-profile individuals, such as Mr. Yakubu, had consistently honored police invitations prior to their arraignment, arguing that such cooperation should be given due consideration in judicial proceedings.
Mr Boakye called for an independent review of the circumstances surrounding these arrests and prosecutions, urging the appropriate authorities to ensure fairness and transparency in the handling of all legal cases.
