The High Court has granted GH₵30 million bail with two justified sureties to Frederick Kumi, widely known as Abu Trica, marking a pivotal turn in his ongoing extradition proceedings.
His legal counsel, Oliver Barker-Vormawor, confirmed the development on Tuesday, 21 April 2026.
He revealed that the decision followed months of detention and several previous unsuccessful applications for release.
Kumi’s legal troubles began on 11 December 2025, when he was arrested during a joint operation between Ghanaian security agencies and United States law enforcement.
US authorities allege that the Ghanaian social media personality and businessman was a key member of an international cybercrime syndicate.
This group reportedly utilised artificial intelligence to orchestrate romance scams targeting elderly American citizens, allegedly defrauding victims of over $8 million.
Under the current indictment, Kumi faces charges of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and money laundering, carrying a maximum sentence of 20 years’ imprisonment.
The extradition process, initially brought before the Gbese District Court, faced immediate pushback from the defence. Kumi’s legal team notably leveraged the prosecution’s decision to clear two original co-accused, Lord Eshun and Bernard Aidoo, arguing that their removal fundamentally weakened the conspiracy charges.
Consequently, the defence sought to quash the lower court’s proceedings through judicial review and certiorari applications at the High Court.
