A commercial motorcyclist, commonly known as an okada rider, has died following a horrific collision with a bauxite tipper truck belonging to Ayawaso Bauxite.
The tragic accident occurred at Agona Nkwanta within the Ahanta West Municipal Assembly of the Western Region.
Reporting on the incident for Rainbow Radio 87.5FM’s Nyankonton Mu Nsem, Ebenezer Manso-Cudjoe, also known as “DCE”, detailed how the rider became trapped beneath the heavy vehicle after the initial impact.
The victim died instantly at the scene, having sustained catastrophic injuries.
The circumstances surrounding the crash suggest a fatal error in judgement regarding right-of-way on a restricted route.
The tipper truck, heavily laden with bauxite, was travelling along a bypass specifically constructed for heavy haulage to avoid the main road, which is frequently congested by motorcyclists.
Despite the intended purpose of this bypass, the okada rider attempted to navigate the same route from the opposite direction.
According to the reporter, witnesses expected the rider to yield to the approaching truck.
Instead, he attempted to cross the path of the vehicle but was struck and subsequently dragged under the tyres.
The force of the impact was so severe that emergency responders and witnesses faced a gruesome scene.
Manso-Cudjoe noted that the rider’s remains were so badly mangled that shovels were required to collect his body from the road.
Due to the lack of immediate formal medical transport, the remains were placed into a wooden tomato crate and transported directly to the cemetery for burial.
