President John Dramani Mahama has assured residents of La and surrounding areas that the reconstructed La General Hospital will be commissioned by November 2027.

Following a site inspection with Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, the President noted his satisfaction with the project’s momentum since work intensified in 2025.

The facility’s prolonged closure following its demolition had previously forced patients to overwhelm the 37 Military and Ridge Hospitals.

Acknowledging the strain on the capital’s healthcare system, the President emphasised that the project remains a top priority.

“Government is fully committed to restoring healthcare access in this area. The closure of this facility has been difficult for the people of La, and we must maintain this momentum to meet our deadline,” he stated. To alleviate immediate pressure, the government plans to upgrade the COVID-era emergency centre at Burma Camp to manage urgent cases in the Accra East district.

This move aligns with the broader Free Primary Healthcare policy focused on accessible, community-level treatment.

Minister Akandoh explained that while redevelopment began in 2020, “funding and payment delays” stalled progress for years until financial issues were resolved in 2025.

“The issues that plagued this project in the past have been resolved. We are now in a phase of consistent delivery,” the Minister remarked, adding that “Once completed, this hospital will serve over 50,000 residents in La and its environs, providing a modern, world-class environment for both patients and staff.”

The multi-storey facility will feature advanced diagnostics, maternity wings, and specialist theatres, restoring a vital institution to the community after a seven-year absence.
