The Administrator of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, Madam Obuobia Darko-Opoku, has unveiled a comprehensive progress report detailing a series of strategic interventions aimed at overhauling specialist medical care and infrastructure across the country.

In a move that signals a significant shift in Ghana’s clinical landscape, the Fund is currently overseeing the simultaneous construction of three state-of-the-art cardiology centres.

These facilities, situated at the Korle Bu, Komfo Anokye, and Tamale Teaching Hospitals, are being developed in close coordination with the Ministry of Health to address a critical deficit in national cardiac and vascular care.

Designed to serve as hubs for advanced cardiovascular interventions, the new centres will house sophisticated catheterisation laboratories and hybrid theatres.

She announced this when she took her turn at the Government Accountability Series on Monday, May 11, 2026.

To ensure holistic patient management, the blueprints also incorporate intensive care units, specialised recovery wards, and dedicated oxygen systems.

By integrating onsite pharmacies and investigation laboratories into these facilities, the Trust Fund aims to provide a seamless clinical environment that reduces the need for patients to seek such complex treatments abroad.

Beyond structural developments, the Fund has moved to strengthen the operational capacity of regional healthcare providers through the targeted distribution of essential medical hardware.

Facilities including the Sunyani Teaching Hospital, Holy Family Hospital in Techiman, and the Volta Regional Hospital in Hohoe have received a fleet of dialysis machines, ICU beds, and high-precision patient monitors.

This logistical support is intended to decentralise critical care services, ensuring that life-saving equipment is available to citizens outside the capital.

The administrator also highlighted a long-term commitment to human resource development through a partnership with the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons.

The collaboration focuses on expanding specialist training centres and decentralising postgraduate medical education.

By establishing these training frameworks across the country, the Trust Fund intends to build a sustainable pipeline of medical specialists, ensuring that the newly commissioned infrastructure is manned by highly skilled native professionals.
