Government Secures Multi-Platform Broadcast Rights for 2026 World Cup

Sports and Recreation Minister Kofi Adams has announced that the government secured broadcasting rights for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, adopting a multi-platform strategy that allows a consortium of Ghanaian media houses to telecast the tournament live.

This policy shift moves away from the traditional single-broadcaster model to broaden nationwide access and alleviate public concerns regarding local coverage.

Speaking at a ceremony in Accra where GCB Bank donated GH¢5 million to the Black Stars, the minister credited the government’s sports fundraising drive for making the acquisition possible.

“Through the support of the government and the fundraising efforts that we are putting together, we have been able to secure broadcasting rights that will allow a consortium of media houses — not just one as it used to be in the past, but several of them — to telecast the World Cup matches live,” the minister declared.

The initiative aims to mobilize corporate support for major sporting events while strengthening Ghana’s broader development agenda through resources generated from these initiatives.
