Appointing Defence Minister Requires Patience, Loyalty and Courage — Security Analyst

Security analyst, Mr Isaac Ayitey, has appealed to Ghanaians to exercise patience as President John Dramani Mahama completes the process of appointing a substantive Minister for Defence following the tragic passing of Dr Edward Omane Boamah several months ago.

Speaking on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, Mr Ayitey described the Defence Ministry as “highly sensitive” and emphasised that the president must take great care to appoint an individual who combines unwavering loyalty with the professional resolve required for such a critical role.

According to Mr Ayitey, this is not a position that should be filled in haste. “You need a person who is loyal, trustworthy, and prepared to make personal sacrifices—even to risk their life—if the situation demands.”

He further added that the stakes are exceptionally high, noting that the ministry requires someone who deeply understands defence, can command respect across the security services, and is capable of making difficult decisions under immense pressure.

The analyst also sought to allay public concern regarding a perceived vacuum at the ministry.

He noted that the Defence Ministry continues to function effectively under the leadership of an acting head and a deputy minister, with senior officials and other stakeholders maintaining day-to-day operations.

The ministry is not dormant as some claim, there are capable hands managing it, and the institutions are working tirelessly to ensure continuity until a substantive minister is named.
