A violent confrontation at Deti, a suburb of Akatsi in the Volta Region, has left two men hospitalised with gunshot wounds and several properties destroyed following a property dispute that spiraled out of control on Wednesday, May 27, 2026.

The Akatsi District Police Command has since launched a full-scale investigation into the incident, treating it as a case of attempted murder and causing unlawful damage.

According to a police statement released by Chief Inspector Francis Kwaku Gomado, Head of the Public Affairs Unit for the Volta Region, the unrest began around 10:30 a.m. when a group of young men allegedly converged on the residence of a local resident, Mensah Awagah, and began demolishing his fence wall.

The situation turned bloody when the property owner reacted to the destruction.

“Their actions reportedly infuriated the suspect, who allegedly went to his room, retrieved a gun and fired at the group,” Chief Inspector Gomado stated.

The gunfire hit two of the young men identified as 44-year-old James Kpanda and 30-year-old Jonathan Kpanda. James sustained a gunshot wound to the knee, while Jonathan was struck in the eye. Both victims are currently receiving treatment at the Akatsi District Hospital.

The shooting triggered a secondary wave of violence from an angry mob in the community. Retaliating against the suspect, the youth went on a rampage inside Awagah’s compound, targeting his vehicles.

They set fire to a Mercedes-Benz private car and two motorbikes parked on the premises.

Although the Ghana National Fire Service was called to intervene, the vehicles were completely “burnt beyond recognition” before firefighters arrived at the scene.

The primary suspect, Mensah Awagah, is currently in police custody assisting with the ongoing investigation. Meanwhile, the police have intensified efforts to track down the other individuals involved in the initial destruction of property and subsequent arson.
