Kumasi doctors suspend strike following intervention by Otumfuo

June 9, 2026
KATH-1-750x375

The Komfo Anokye Doctors’ Association (KADA) has officially suspended its ongoing industrial action, bringing relief to patients and public health administrators in the region. The decision took effect today, June 9, 2026, at 6:00 p.m., following intensive deliberations.

According to an official statement issued by the association, the breakthrough came after high-level mediation efforts involving traditional leadership and hospital management.

“This decision has been made following fruitful engagements and the timely intervention of His Royal Majesty, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Hospital Board, Management and other key stakeholders who have demonstrated commitment towards addressing the concerns that led to the industrial action,” KADA stated.

While the striking doctors have returned to work, leadership emphasized that negotiations are not entirely over. However, the association chose to prioritize the welfare of the public while formal talks proceed.

“While KADA remains committed to ensuring that the issues that occasioned the strike are fully resolved, we have carefully considered the potential impact of the prolonged action on patient care and public health,” the release noted, adding that public interest and patient safety remain central to their responsibilities.

The association expressed profound gratitude to the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, as well as the National Executive Council of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA) for their unwavering support during the impasse.

KADA also extended appreciation to several allied health groups, including the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) and the Health Services Workers’ Union (HSWU), for their solidarity throughout the dispute.
