The Ministry of Education has directed the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES) to launch an immediate investigation into the alleged misconduct and assault of a student by a teacher.
The directive follows a widely condemned incident involving the educator, who has since been apprehended by law enforcement.
Authorities are currently verifying the official employment status of the individual involved to determine the appropriate administrative disciplinary actions.
“The DG of the GES has been directed to investigate the despicable conduct of the so-called teacher,” stated Deputy Minister for Education, Dr. Clement Apaak.
“This is necessary because not everyone teaching in a school is an employee of the GES. If confirmed that the said teacher is indeed a staff of GES, Ghanaians can expect him to be sanctioned.”
The Ministry emphasised its zero-tolerance policy toward misconduct within the educational sector, underscoring that accountability applies equally to both the student body and academic staff.
“Much as we would not accept indiscipline and misconduct from students, so too would we not tolerate same from teachers and managers of our schools,” Dr. Apaak added.
While the GES conducts its internal inquiry, parallel criminal proceedings have already commenced.
“Even as the GES conducts its investigations, we can report that the said teacher has since been arrested by the police for assault,” Dr. Apaak confirmed. “The law would take its course, and if confirmed that the said teacher is a staff of GES, he would be sanctioned accordingly.”
The Ministry maintains that strict regulatory standards will be upheld to ensure a safe environment across all public schools.
