A 30-year-old scrap dealer has been sentenced to 12 months in prison after being caught stealing solar light batteries on the campus of the University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR).
The convict was processed and jailed after failing to pay a court-ordered fine of GH₵5,000 to secure his freedom.
For months, the university management and student body had been plagued by persistent thefts, frequently complaining about the disappearance of campus lighting and other valuable property.
Campus authorities revealed that more than 50 solar batteries had been systematically stolen.
Each time the university installed new batteries to light up the campus, they were targeted and removed, prompting administration to issue an internal alert urging all security personnel to be on high alert.
The breakthrough came when students spotted the suspect in the act.
They apprehended him on campus and promptly handed him over to the local police, who subsequently initiated criminal proceedings.
Reporting the incident on Rainbow Radio’s Nyankonton Mu Nsem, broadcast journalist Nana Kwame confirmed that the suspect made his final court appearance where the 12-month custodial sentence was handed down.
According to local reports, the young man was initially given the option to pay a GH₵5,000 fine to avoid prison time, but he was ultimately jailed after failing to raise the required funds.
