The Savannah Regional Health Directorate has launched a full-scale investigation following the sudden disappearance of a newborn baby from the East Gonja District Hospital in Salaga.
The incident, which occurred on Wednesday, 10th June 2026, has thrown the medical facility into a state of anxiety and triggered an immediate security response.
According to an official statement released by regional health authorities, hospital staff conducted an exhaustive search within the facility premises immediately after the baby was reported missing.
However, after initial efforts failed to yield any results, the hospital management formally transferred the case to the East Gonja District Police Command to initiate a criminal investigation.
In a press release addressing the developing situation, the Regional Director of Health Service for the Savannah Region, Dr. John Ekow Otoo, expressed profound distress over the incident.
“The Savannah Regional Health Directorate of the Ghana Health Service regrets to announce an unfortunate incident involving a missing newborn at the East Gonja District Hospital in Salaga,” Dr. Otoo stated.
He further conveyed the institution’s solidarity with the aggrieved relatives, adding, “The Service extends its deepest sympathies to the parents and family of the baby during this difficult period and assures them of its full support as investigations continue.”
The Regional Directorate is currently collaborating with hospital administrators, the Ghana Police Service, and local stakeholders to establish the exact circumstances that allowed the breach to occur and to ensure the safe recovery of the infant.
Amid rising public concern regarding security protocols within regional hospitals, health officials have moved to reassure communities of their safety.
Dr. Otoo stressed that the well-being of patients and newborns remains the topmost priority of the Ghana Health Service, promising that the organization is fully committed to supporting all ongoing efforts aimed at reuniting the baby with its family.
Law enforcement and health authorities are urgently appealing to the public for any actionable intelligence that could assist investigators.
Members of the public who may have noticed suspicious activity or possess information regarding the whereabouts of the missing newborn are urged to contact the nearest police station, the Savannah Regional Health Directorate, or the East Gonja District Hospital immediately.
Officials have assured the public that all information provided will be treated with the utmost confidentiality.
