The National Democratic Congress (NDC) today officially renamed its national headquarters after the party’s late founder, former President Jerry John Rawlings, drawing praise from former Deputy General Secretary Koku Anyidoho.
The ceremony coincides with the birthdate of the late leader, a move Anyidoho described as an important milestone for party cohesion.
“Today, June 22, marks the birthdate of Founder of the NDC, President Jerry John Rawlings and a very significant Event is taking place at the Headquarters of the Party to name the building after the Founder,” Anyidoho said in a statement.
Reflecting on the history of the headquarters, Anyidoho noted that the structure was built under the administration of the late former President John Evans Atta-Mills.
He highlighted the deep political relationship between Rawlings and Atta-Mills, explaining that the renaming bridges the legacies of both late leaders.
“The building remains one of the most significant monuments built for the Party by President John Evans Atta-Mills – humbly so, I was a deep insider,” Anyidoho noted. “I know for sure that the soul of President Atta-Mills would be smiling that in death, the lasting legacy he gave the NDC is the symbol being used in honoring the man who gave him the opportunity to become Vice President.”
Koku Anyidoho stressed that Atta-Mills maintained lifelong gratitude toward Rawlings for launching his executive political career, which eventually led to the presidency.
“I know it for a fact that President Atta-Mills never stopped being grateful to President Rawlings for the opportunity given to serve as Vice President which made it possible to lead the NDC,” he added.
Congratulating the current party executives for executing the renaming, Anyidoho expressed optimism that the gesture would help heal internal rifts and strengthen the opposition party ahead of future elections.
“Ayekoo to the Leadership of the NDC for making it possible to etch the name of Jerry John Rawlings firmly on the image of the NDC,” Anyidoho stated. “I believe that this Event today, will walk the NDC onto more solid grounds of party unity.”
