The Sakumono District Police Command has recovered GH₵140,000.00 and an AK-47 assault rifle following a brazen robbery attack on a mobile money vendor at Lashibi.
According to an official statement issued by the Accra Regional Public Affairs Unit of the Ghana Police Service on Saturday, the incident occurred on Friday, 3rd July 2026.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the victim was driving home from work with a bag containing the substantial cash sum when two armed men on a motorbike launched an attack.
The suspects opened fire on the victim’s vehicle, shattering the front windscreen and deflating the right rear tyre, before seizing the money and attempting to flee.
The heist took a dramatic turn when the complainant returned fire at the escaping suspects. One of the armed robbers was hit and died at the scene, prompting his accomplice to flee on foot. In his haste, the fleeing suspect abandoned the stolen bag, allowing police to fully recover the GH₵140,000.00.
The complainant escaped the encounter without any injuries.
A subsequent search of the suspect yielded an AK-47 assault rifle, two magazines loaded with fifty-five rounds of live ammunition, an additional ýeleven loose rounds, and GH₵3,000.00 in cash.
Officers also retrieved a Samsung mobile phone and an identification card identifying the deceased as 46-year-old Innocent Elemuwa Akachukeu. Forensic teams recovered five spent AK-47 shells and two spent pistol shells from the crime scene.
The body of the deceased has since been transferred to the Police Hospital mortuary for preservation, autopsy, and formal identification.
The Accra Regional Police Command, which has taken over the case, confirmed that active efforts are underway to track down and arrest the fleeing accomplice.
