A woman has died and her partner has been left paralysed after their home collapsed in Agona Nyaakrom, in Ghana’s Central Region, following heavy torrential rains on Saturday.
Reporting on the incident to Rainbow Radio in Nyankonton Mu Nsem, a reporter identified as Nana Kweku explained that the family house was an aged structure with significant structural weaknesses.
According to the account, the woman had briefly stepped out of the house.
Upon her return, she reportedly heard disturbing noises coming from the building but ignored them before retiring to sleep.
Moments later, the structure gave way.
The woman was rushed to the Duakwa Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Her partner, who was inside the building during the collapse, survived the incident but sustained critical injuries that have left him paralysed.
It has been noted that the pair, both local farmers, lived alone in the residence and had not formalised their union through traditional marriage rites.
Officials from the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) have since visited the site to conduct an assessment.
A team led by Mr Mensah has identified several other buildings in the area showing signs of structural failure and cracks.
These properties have been marked for urgent demolition to prevent further casualties.
