President John Mahama has unveiled plans for a new maternity wing at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, branding the existing facility unsafe and inappropriate for expectant mothers.
The President revealed that the government has initiated the tendering process for the development, which is set to replace the historic Gordon Guggisberg Building.
He characterised the current structure as a hazard to both patients and medical staff.
Addressing attendees at the inauguration of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund Cardiac Catheterisation Laboratory—located within the hospital’s National Cardiothoracic Centre—President Mahama emphasised that upgrading healthcare infrastructure continues to be a primary focus for his government.
“Let me also announce that we are going through the procurement process to build a new maternity block for the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital,” he stated.
He further explained that the existing maternity unit is slated for demolition due to its advanced state of decay.
“And we will pull down the old Gordon Guggisberg building that has today become a death trap; every other day our mothers give birth in that building. It is a death trap that can cause devastation,” President Mahama remarked.
According to the President, this move underscores a wider dedication by his administration to fund public works that safeguard lives and enhance the dignity of Ghanaian citizens.
He maintained that national progress should be gauged not merely by expenditure on roads, bridges, and structural projects, but also by advancements in medical care and public welfare.
“And so let history record that this generation chose to invest not only in roads, bridges and buildings, but also in the health, dignity and future of our people,” he said.
President Mahama concluded that the genuine success of initiatives like the newly opened cardiac catheterisation laboratory would ultimately be determined by the lives preserved and the comfort offered to families, rather than just the advanced technology on display.
“The true significance of this facility will be measured not by the sophistication of the equipment, but by the countless lives it will save, by the families it will keep together and by the hope it will restore to a grateful nation,” he noted.
