Seven people have been arrested in the Ekumfi District of the Central Region for allegedly refusing to participate in the National Sanitation Day exercise.
The suspects were detained at Ekumfi Essuehyia and Ekumpoano for continuing to operate their shops during the mandatory clean-up campaign, ignoring directives to join residents in clearing streets, gutters, and markets.
Police officers deployed across the district to monitor compliance carried out the arrests.
Speaking to Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5 FM, the District Chief Executive (DCE) for Ekumfi, Hon. Nana Ismeal Asamoah, emphasised that the sanitation initiative is a collective national responsibility rather than a mere government programme.
He warned that poor waste management and choked drains heavily contribute to national flooding, stating that his administration will strictly enforce regulations.
Anyone deliberately flouting sanitation directives will face the full rigours of the law, the DCE added.
The Central Regional Director of the National Apprenticeship Programme, Mr Ebenezer Abeiku Essian, commended the residents who participated and urged the youth to normalise environmental cleanliness.
Mr Essian also called on authorities to demolish illegal structures built on waterways, noting that regular clean-ups must be paired with strict planning enforcement to permanently resolve Ghana’s perennial flooding and sanitation challenges.
