‘Oppressive and Cruel’: Atta Akyea Slams GH¢50m Bail Conditions Set for Dennis Miracles Aboagye

Samuel Atta Akyea, the legal counsel for Dennis Miracles Aboagye, has disclosed that his client has been granted a GH¢50 million bail with three sureties, two of whom must be justified, by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).

Speaking in an interview with journalists, the prominent lawyer vehemently criticised the stringent bail conditions, describing them as outrightly “cruel” and structurally impossible to satisfy.

Mr Atta Akyea lamented that there was absolutely no way the aspiring National Communications Director for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) would be able to meet such astronomical terms. He was emphatic that the requirements were not only oppressive but were also deliberately designed to punish his client.

When asked specifically if his client could be released immediately, the lawyer stated categorically that there was no way they could post the bail under the current terms.

He remarked that the rule of law in the country is currently “sitting upside down,” calling the entire development highly unfortunate.

Expressing his bewilderment, Mr Atta Akyea asserted that he could not comprehend why, in a civilised society, his client—who had voluntarily returned to the country from his travels—was arrested and remains detained.

He pointed out that Mr Aboagye had consistently cooperated with authorities during past invitations, making his sudden arrest and ongoing detention completely unjustifiable.

According to him, past records show that his client had already cooperated with an invitation from EOCO and was assured he would be contacted if his presence was required again.

He heavily criticised the state agency for holding him, arguing that democracy and the rule of law have suffered a massive setback when a decent citizen who is not a flight risk is treated this way.

Mr Atta Akyea added that it makes no sense to detain a man who voluntarily cleared immigration at the Kotoka International Airport, lamenting that Dennis Miracles Aboagye is being treated as if he were a common criminal.
