The King of Dagbon, Yaa Naa Mahama Abukari II, has passed away.
As the 41st monarch, his enstoolment on 18 January 2019 concluded a 16-year chieftaincy conflict between the Abudu and Andani royal gates, bringing a historic era of reconciliation and stability to the kingdom.
Born Bukali in Mion, he was the son of Yaa Naa Mahama II (who reigned from 1938 to 1948) and Princess Ayishetu of Kulunkpegu.
He progressed through the traditional hierarchy, serving as chief of Kpunkpono and later as the ruler of Savelugu—one of the three gate skins eligible for the paramount Yendi throne.
The Yendi throne had been vacant since 2002 due to violent clashes between the rival royal factions.
Following extensive state-backed mediation by eminent chiefs, a peace roadmap was established, leading to his selection by Dagbon kingmakers in 2019.
