Majority blocked press to hide BoG’s massive reliance on NPP’s gold for FX support – Minority

The Minority in Parliament has alleged that the Majority faction kicked the media out of a crucial briefing to prevent the Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG) from admitting that an economic stabilisation policy was actually introduced by the previous administration.

According to the Member of Parliament for Ofoase Ayirebi, Hon. Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, the Majority is desperate to hide the fact that current foreign exchange (FX) interventions are heavily reliant on the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme.

“The answers even provide the dates and the steps being taken to continue the programme. Yet they cleared the press so they can continue to peddle a different story to the Ghanaian public,” Hon. Oppong Nkrumah said.

Protesting against this media exclusion, the Minority has suspended its participation in the Committee of the Whole meeting with the Central Bank boss.

Hon. Oppong Nkrumah argued that critical issues regarding monetary policy, reserve management, and FX market interventions directly affect the livelihoods of ordinary citizens and must not be shrouded in secrecy.

“We believe that the people of Ghana deserve to know what is happening with their central bank. You cannot have a conversation about the economy behind closed doors when the impact will be felt by every Ghanaian,” he stated.

The opposition MPs have vowed to boycott the session until journalists are granted access to cover the proceedings.

“We are suspending our participation until such a time that this process is opened up to the Ghanaian people through the media,” Hon. Oppong Nkrumah added.
