National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) coverage has climbed to 66.2 per cent, with the government now aiming to surpass the 70 per cent mark by next year, according to the Deputy Minister for Health, Hon. Grace Ayensu-Danquah.

Appearing before Parliament’s Committee on Economy and Development, Hon. Ayensu-Danquah attributed the upward trend to fresh interventions designed to streamline registration and boost accessibility.

“We said that my NHIS were which is allowing registrants to register from their homes and also we have intensified outreaches for registration and also group registration,” she told the Committee.

“And that is how we are going to sixty-six percent and we continue to do that especially the regions with low coverage,” she added.

The ‘My NHIS’ mobile application enables Ghanaians to sign up and renew their membership from the comfort of their homes, eliminating the need to visit local NHIS offices.

Hon. Ayensu-Danquah further explained that the Ministry is focusing its mobilised outreach programmes on regions with lagging enrolment figures to help propel the national coverage beyond 70 per cent in the coming year.

The update was delivered during the Ministry’s briefing to the parliamentary committee regarding strides made in expanding universal healthcare access across the country.
