The Kwadaso Circuit Court in Kumasi has sentenced 26-year-old Ebenezer Frimpong to one month in prison for attempting to steal a police armoured vehicle at Nkawie in the Ashanti Region.
The convict was arrested after law enforcement officers intercepted his attempt to drive away the high-security operational vehicle.
Following his arrest, the court ordered a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation to determine his mental state. Upon being declared mentally fit to stand trial by medical experts, Frimpong changed his initial plea to guilty.
The court proceedings took an unusual turn when the convict dropped to his knees before presiding judge Jephtha Appau. Weeping openly, Frimpong pleaded with the bench to facilitate his recruitment into the Ghana Police Service rather than handing him a custodial sentence.
Delivering the judgment, His Lordship Jephtha Appau stated that the court opted for a lenient one-month prison sentence in consideration of the convict’s youth. The judge added that Frimpong’s decision to plead guilty saved the court valuable time and resources, justifying a reduced punishment.
