The Government of Ghana will allocate funds in the 2027 Budget and Medium Term to deliver a lasting, comprehensive remedy to the recurring flooding plaguing Accra and other vulnerable parts of the nation.
Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, the Minister for Finance, disclosed this while presenting the Mid-Year Fiscal Policy Review of the 2026 Budget Statement to Parliament on Thursday, July 23, 2026.
He informed MPs that the directive came straight from President John Mahama.
Following the presidential mandate, the Ministry of Works, Housing and Water Resources has been instructed to formulate the comprehensive plan to tackle the crisis permanently.
Opening his presentation, the Finance Minister reflected on the tragic deluge that battered several communities last month. He highlighted the heartbreaking loss of life, displacement of families, disruption of businesses, and severe destruction of vital infrastructure.
“Ghana was not alone. Similar floods also affected Nigeria, Lokoja and Cotonou highlighting the growing flood risk across West African coastline and the effect of climate change,” he told the House.
Dr. Forson stressed that the administration moved swiftly in the aftermath of the disaster by visiting affected residents, releasing emergency relief funds, and rolling out a nationwide sanitation drive.
He further revealed that, under the President’s guidance, additional capital is being disbursed for ongoing dredging operations and the construction of key drainage channels in high-risk zones.
Turning to macro-economic performance, the Minister voiced immense satisfaction with the administration’s trajectory over the past eighteen months.
“Mr Speaker, I stand before this house with a deep sense of pride and confidence born out of strong performance in the last one and half years in the management of the Ghanaian economy,” he stated.
