President John Dramani Mahama has reiterated Ghana’s demand for the African Union to formally tackle the recurring xenophobic attacks against foreign nationals in South Africa at its next ordinary summit.
Speaking after bilateral talks on the sidelines of the AU Extraordinary Summit in Accra, President Mahama confirmed that AU Commission Chairman Mahmoud Ali Youssouf has agreed to place the issue on the upcoming summit agenda.
The announcement follows a meeting in Accra between President Mahama and a special envoy dispatched by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa.
President Mahama stated that Ghana harbors no ill will toward South Africa, but emphasized deep concern over the persistent violence and extensive financial losses suffered by continental migrants.
He warned that ignoring the situation threatens African solidarity and impedes collective efforts toward economic integration.
According to the Ghanaian leader, officially placing the crisis on the AU agenda provides South Africa with a constructive platform to address the continent, noting that sweeping the issue under the carpet will never resolve its root causes.
Reaffirming Ghana’s dedication to pan-African unity, President Mahama pledged to work alongside fellow member states to guarantee the safety, dignity, and investments of all Africans across the continent.
“We do not harbour ill will toward South Africa. However, we remain deeply concerned about the attacks and the significant capital losses suffered by people from various countries on the continent.
This undermines the very spirit of African solidarity and our collective efforts toward continental integration.
Sweeping this matter under the carpet will not resolve its root causes. That is why Ghana officially wrote to the AU Commission requesting that this issue be placed on the agenda for the next summit.
Placing this on the AU agenda gives South Africa a formal, constructive platform to share its perspective, and together, as a continent, work toward a lasting solution.
