The Acting Director of Elections and IT for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mahdi Gibril, has stated that plans and guidelines for the party’s presidential and parliamentary primaries will only be finalized after new national executives are elected into office.
According to him, the outgoing leadership lacks the capacity and legal locus to plan the upcoming primaries, as that mandate rests solely with the incoming executive team.
Speaking on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, Mr Gibril explained that the party has not yet begun drafting guidelines for the presidential and parliamentary races because the current executives cannot legally do so.
“The incumbent executives do not have the mandate to plan for the presidential and parliamentary primaries. We would have to wait until the new executives are elected, and then they would work on the guidelines for the presidential and parliamentary primaries,” he stated.
The NDC is currently conducting its internal elections to elect branch, constituency, and national officers.
Mr Gibril highlighted that the branch elections were successfully conducted, with over 350,000 branch executives elected across the country. He added that the party is now preparing to conduct its constituency elections.
“We are now set to go ahead with the constituency elections after successfully organising the branch elections,” he said.
He reaffirmed the NDC’s commitment to ensuring that all internal elections are held smoothly, without disagreements, confusion, or violence. He further assured members that measures have been put in place to ensure the upcoming constituency and national elections remain transparent, free, and fair.
