Government has set in motion a major clearance exercise to recruit 16,000 health professionals this year under an expansive manpower drive spanning 2026 to 2028, the Minister of Health, Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has told Parliament.

Appearing before the House today to address pressing questions on the sector, the Minister emphasized that the intake forms part of a strategic roadmap designed to shore up shortfalls across health facilities and absorb batches of qualified, unposted personnel into the public workforce.

“We are progressively recruiting sixteen thousand professionals this year, covering the 2026 to 2028 window,” he stated.

Providing a breakdown for nursing and midwifery practitioners, Hon. Akandoh highlighted that clearance for the 2021 graduating cohort remains the immediate priority, revealing that the initial stage of their placement is on the verge of conclusion.

“In the Nurses and Midwives category, we are prioritizing the recruitment of the 2021 batch. The first phase is almost completed. Interviews at the various district centers have also been completed and professionals are currently reporting at their various permanent work stations,” he noted.

The Minister assured lawmakers that the next phase of the recruitment scheme will be executed prior to the close of the calendar year.

“The second phase of the recruitment process will be undertaken before the end of this year,” he added.

Hon. Akandoh further signaled that once the current phase wraps up, government will systematically transition to clear the 2022 group before extending the intake to the 2023 set.
