The Member of Parliament for Afadzato South, Hon. Frank Afriyie, has welcomed the Supreme Court’s ruling to abolish the delegate system, describing the verdict as a crucial milestone in strengthening the nation’s democratic governance.
Speaking to journalists, the lawmaker argued that political parties ultimately draw their authority from the grassroots, making it essential for all members in good standing to participate directly in selecting their leaders.
“I think that if we cultivate this culture of ensuring that everyone who matters, those we exercise powers on their behalf, must partake in the democratic architecture, it will in the long run lessen the rate of perception of corruption and the feeling that the one with the deepest pocket wins the day.”
While conceding that opening up internal elections to the broader membership will present initial operational hurdles, Hon. Afriyie maintained that the move will ultimately bolster internal party democracy.
He referenced the National Democratic Congress’s 2015 attempt at a similar framework, noting that despite the initial teething problems, the long-term benefits far outweigh the challenges.
“I see this particular verdict from the Supreme Court as a win for the country. It is a victory for deepening our democracy. It’s a victory for eroding the perception that it’s about the one with the fattest pocket that carries the day.”
The MP further emphasized that when politicians perform their duties with dedication and integrity, electorate support will naturally align with the most qualified candidates rather than being influenced by financial inducements.
