The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has announced a financial donation of US$250,000 (approximately GHS 3 million) to support victims affected by the country’s recent devastating floods.

The package forms part of the regional block’s commitment to providing emergency relief and disaster response to member states during humanitarian crises.

Disclosing the development in an official statement, the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to transparency and accountability in managing international support.

He assured the public that every cedi of the donation will be transferred to the designated state agencies as soon as the funds clear into the ministry’s account.

“I wish to announce, in the spirit of transparency and accountability, that the Foreign Ministry has just been notified by ECOWAS that they have decided to donate US$250,000.00 (about GHS3million) to Ghana for victims of the recent devastating floods,” Hon. Ablakwa stated.

He added, “As can be expected, the Foreign Ministry will hand over the entire funds as soon as we receive it in our accounts.”

Expressing gratitude on behalf of the administration and the nation, the Minister lauded ECOWAS for its prompt assistance to the flood-hit communities.

“The Government of Ghana conveys boundless appreciation to ECOWAS for their solidarity and true African compassion,” he said.

The recent floods have displaced numerous households, destroyed farmlands, and washed away critical infrastructure in several parts of the country, prompting emergency relief calls from both national bodies and international allies.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is expected to outline the exact distribution channels and disbursement dates once the funds are fully processed.
