Exactly one month after the devastating floods of 29 June 2026, the Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Hon. Ahmed Ibrahim, has undertaken a working visit to evaluate progress on government interventions aimed at tackling the post-disaster sanitation crisis.
The field assessment forms part of sustained efforts by the government to ensure the full execution of presidential directives, which included a two-day national clean-up exercise and emergency measures to accelerate the evacuation of accumulated waste across affected communities.
Five out of the six waste transfer stations established to support the evacuation process are now fully operational.
The remaining facility at Malam is expected to come online as soon as construction on its access road is finalized.
During the visit, Hon. Ahmed Ibrahim monitored environmental conditions on the ground to pinpoint remaining bottlenecks and ensure that emergency measures introduced in the wake of the disaster are yielding tangible results for residents.
Outcomes from the monitoring exercise will inform upcoming consultations with the Council of State and the Presidency, as government moves to overhaul national sanitation systems and strengthen preparedness against future emergencies.
