The Ministry of Health has denied reports of an antiretroviral medicine shortage, reassuring the public that essential HIV treatments remain available across designated health facilities in Ghana.
The response follows a press statement from the Network of Persons Living with HIV in Ghana (NAP+ Ghana), which raised concerns regarding the supply of the life-saving medications.
Addressing the claims, Ministry of Health Spokesperson Tony Goodman stated, “It is not accurate that antiretroviral medicines are unavailable in the country. ARVs are available at designated health facilities across Ghana to support the continued treatment and care of persons living with HIV.”
Goodman explained that the ministry is actively restocking commodities at its medical stores as part of routine supply operations, noting that “plans are far advanced to fulfilling this obligation” to ensure the timely distribution of essential supplies nationwide.
The Ministry also dismissed allegations that shipments had expired while awaiting clearance at the port, clarifying that it “continues to work with relevant stakeholders to ensure the effective management and timely clearance of medical commodities.”
Following direct engagements with leadership from NAP+ Ghana, officials pledged to maintain an open-door policy to address ongoing concerns. Goodman emphasized that the ministry remains “committed to constructive engagement with all stakeholders to ensure that persons living with HIV have uninterrupted access to the medicines and services they require.”
