Ghanaians must take charge of their health by adopting healthier lifestyles, according to Professor Vincent Boima, Head of the Department of Medicine and Therapeutics at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital.

Speaking at the 14th Annual Scientific Conference of the Medical Laboratory Science Students’ Association, Professor Boima highlighted that the rise in chronic diseases, particularly among young people, stems largely from modern lifestyle choices.

He warned against the overuse of unregulated herbal medications and aphrodisiacs, citing them as major contributors to heart and kidney conditions.

Environmental factors also play a critical role in the increasing incidence of kidney failure among the youth. To counter this, he emphasized that routine medical checkups are essential for detecting and treating kidney diseases early.

Echoing these concerns, Dr. Gloria Amegatcher, Public Relations Officer for the Ghana Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists, urged the public to be more mindful of what they consume.

She noted that many health conditions in Ghana arise from negligence and poor habits, stressing that taking proactive measures to prevent kidney disease is far better than seeking treatment after the damage is done.

Dr. Amegatcher also underscored the vital role medical laboratory scientists play in shaping the national healthcare ecosystem. She called on the government to adequately equip these professionals with the requisite tools needed to perform their duties effectively.
