Affected vendors stress that city officials have yet to hold direct meetings to clarify transition logistics, site facilities, or relocation procedures.
While the traders maintain they support urban modernization, they insist that any eviction or redevelopment must proceed through transparent, direct consultation.
Background
The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has given traders and other occupants on portions of land at Agbogbloshie popularly referred to as Nzema Market earmarked for the construction of a 24-Hour Economy Market a one-month notice to vacate.
The notice period is expected to expire on August 28, 2026, after which the Assembly will begin removing structures located on the affected portions of land.
All affected traders and commercial operators at the Agbogbloshie Cargo Station, the Nzema Market and portions of the Yam Market will be relocated to a parcel of land prepared by the Assembly solely for the affected persons.
The month-long notice was formally served on Tuesday as the AMA marked structures on the affected portions of land for demolition, following a series of consultations with traditional authorities, market leaders, traders and other stakeholders over the proposed redevelopment and planned clearance of the area.
Following the marking exercise, the Assembly is expected to embark on a public education and sensitisation campaign from Wednesday, August 5, to inform traders, community leaders and the general public about the redevelopment, its benefits, the clearance process and the arrangements being made for affected persons.
