The Jomoro Municipal Assembly in the Western Region has officially launched a free primary healthcare scheme designed to enhance access to quality, affordable medical care for local residents.

Held under the theme “Removing Financial Barrier Towards Achieving Universal Health Coverage”, the initiative aims to eliminate the economic obstacles that frequently deter people—particularly those in deprived areas—from seeking prompt medical intervention.

The ceremony brought together health administrators, local authority officials, traditional rulers, and community members, all of whom hailed the project as a critical milestone for public health.

Addressing the gathering, Western Regional Health Committee member, Betty B. Sam, lauded the Assembly for taking the initiative. She stressed that accessible primary care remains vital for early diagnosis and preventing minor ailments from deteriorating into critical conditions.

Madam Sam urged residents to make health a priority by taking full advantage of the service, whilst calling on health professionals to treat patients with compassion and professionalism.

For his part, the Municipal Chief Executive for Jomoro, Boadi Benedict, reaffirmed the Assembly’s determination to improve healthcare delivery across the municipality, noting that the scheme forms part of broader measures to guarantee basic medical care regardless of a patient’s financial standing. He assured the public that the local authority will continue collaborating with key partners to sustain the programme, whilst appealing to residents to co-operate fully with health officials.

Presiding over the function, former Jomoro District Chief Executive, Sylvester Daddie, described the initiative as a major achievement for the municipality. Praising the leadership for prioritizing citizen welfare, he urged traditional rulers and local stakeholders to actively support the policy to ensure its long-term viability.

The Jomoro Municipal Health Director, Gabriel Yengliereh, underscored the pivotal role primary healthcare plays in disease prevention and early detection. He explained that bringing basic services directly to the doorstep of citizens would encourage early medical consultations before conditions worsen, whilst appealing for total co-operation between health staff and the public.

Although the Member of Parliament and Deputy Transport Minister, Dorcas Affo-Toffey, could not attend the event in person, she was represented by her personal assistant, Godwin Alueke, and the Jomoro National Democratic Congress (NDC) Constituency Youth Organiser, Ernest Anaman.
