NCPTA gives WAEC seven-day ultimatum over 2026 BECE grading concerns

The National Council of Parent-Teacher Associations (NCPTA) has issued a seven-day ultimatum to the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), demanding an immediate and clear public explanation of the grading methodology applied to the 2026 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).

Addressing growing anxiety among parents and educational institutions, the Council stressed that urgent action is required to ensure transparency, fairness, and due process, while restoring public confidence in the national assessment framework.

The NCPTA is insisting that WAEC demystify the technical processes behind the examination outcomes, noting that candidates’ educational futures hang in the balance.

“WAEC should provide a clear, accessible explanation of the grading system used for the 2026 BECE. Parents and schools should be shown: how raw marks are treated, how grades are derived, how standardisation operates, how the final grade is determined, worked examples, and why mock or school-based percentages may not correspond directly with final examination grades,” the Council stated.

Beyond the call for clarity, the NCPTA is pushing for an independent technical audit of the entire 2026 BECE assessment and results-processing pipeline to verify the integrity of the published scores.

Stakeholders across the country now await WAEC’s response as the seven-day deadline begins to count.
