The Dansoman Circuit Court has discontinued the criminal case against retired Ghanaian boxer Michael Ayitey Okai, popularly known as Ayitey Powers.
The former boxer appeared in court on Wednesday, September 2, following a one-week remand over alleged death threats directed at National Sports Authority (NSA) Director-General Yaw Ampofo Ankrah.
Powers was arrested by the Accra Regional Police Command on Monday, August 24, after a video circulated on social media in which he allegedly threatened Mr Ampofo Ankrah. His arrest followed demands for prosecution by the Ghana Boxing Interim Management Committee.
The withdrawal of the charges comes after public intervention by fellow retired boxer Braimah Kamoko, known as Bukom Banku. While condemning the threats as unlawful, Banku appealed directly to Mr Ampofo Ankrah for forgiveness on his long-time rival’s behalf.
Mr Ampofo Ankrah subsequently confirmed to Banku that he had no interest in pursuing the matter further, prompting the state to drop all charges.
