The Western Region is home to approximately 23,000 people living with HIV, according to the latest 2025 projection figures published by the Ghana AIDS Commission. The updated estimates reveal that the region continues to record roughly three new transmissions daily.
Addressing journalists at an HIV/AIDS Stakeholders Review Meeting in Sekondi, Western Regional Technical Coordinator for the Ghana AIDS Commission, Antonio Francis, acknowledged a minor dip in transmission rates but stressed that relaxing preventive protocols could derail national eradication targets.
“Per the 2025 HIV estimates and projections which were done by the Ghana AIDS Commission and the report came out this year, we can say that for the Western Region, we have roughly 23,000 plus people that we estimate are living with the virus in the region.
“If you look at the rate of new infections, it has reduced slightly from somewhere around 992 persons newly infected with HIV.
“What this means is that, if you should do a further breakdown, it means that every day we are getting at least three people getting infected in the region.”
Francis warned that failing to curb daily transmissions through comprehensive treatment programs and robust preventive strategies threatens Ghana’s target to eliminate AIDS by 2030.
