Officers from the Bono Regional Drug Law Enforcement Unit have arrested a 66-year-old woman and her 29-year-old son following an intelligence-led operation that uncovered a massive haul of suspected illicit drugs and cash in Dormaa Ahenkro.
The suspects, identified as Mary Awuni and her son, Maxwell Akukah, were apprehended at Kumi Daa Street (KDS), a suburb within the Dormaa Central Municipality.
During a thorough search of their residence, police recovered 147 yellow compressed slabs wrapped in sellotape—suspected to be Indian hemp—alongside 270 boxes and 329 blisters of assorted Tramadol, 14 blisters of Rohypnol, GH¢87,751 in cash, and CFA 2,000.
A breakdown of the haul revealed that officers discovered a metal trunk in Mary Awuni’s room containing 14 blisters of Rohypnol, GH¢72,612, and CFA 2,000.
In her initial statement, Awuni attempted to distance herself from part of the seizure, claiming the money and specific items were left with her for transit.
“She claimed that the items and money had been given to her by a man in Accra for delivery to another person in Côte d’Ivoire, but admitted ownership of the items found in her room,” the police stated.
Her son, Maxwell Akukah, was taken into custody after police searched a separate room on the premises, retrieving the bulk of the suspected Indian hemp, Tramadol, and GH¢15,139 in cash.
Akukah denied ownership of the contraband, telling investigators that “the items belonged to his brother, Anthony, who was said to be outside Dormaa Ahenkro.”
Both suspects remain in custody while police extend their search for additional accomplices.
“The suspects are in Police custody assisting with investigations, while the Police continue investigations towards the prosecution of persons found culpable,” said Chief Inspector Thomas Akeelah, Public Relations Officer for the Bono Regional Police Command.
“The Command assures the public of its commitment to combating narcotics-related offences and urges the public to continue providing credible information to support the Police in protecting communities and maintaining public safety,” he added.
