The Convener for the Justice and Accountability Forum, Nana Bonsu, has described the ongoing debate surrounding the reported losses involving Goldbod and the Bank of Ghana—as captured in the International Monetary Fund (IMF) report—as completely unnecessary.
Appearing on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, Nana Bonsu stated that the primary focus should be on the total losses incurred and the concrete measures being implemented to prevent a recurrence in future transactions. He posited that the political back-and-forth between Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin and Goldbod Chief Executive Officer Sammy Gyamfi is a complete waste of time. He called for an immediate end to the politicisation of the issue, stressing that the public must demand answers regarding the financial losses regardless of who bears the responsibility.
According to him, it is vital that the Ghanaian public is clearly informed about the root causes of the losses and the specific mechanisms put in place to avert similar occurrences. He expressed deep concern over how politicians routinely turn matters of critical national interest into partisan disputes.
“The question we need to ask is whether there were losses. The accusation of extortion, counterclaims, and going to court about defamation is not what we need now. What we need now is to know what led to the losses. Who takes the blame for that?” he questioned.
He suggested that anyone who believes financial impropriety occurred should test the law in court to demand transparent answers, emphasizing that the lost funds belong to taxpayers and must not be swept under the carpet through standard political distractions.
“We cannot continue to waste taxpayers’ money. We have to interrogate the matter and prevent this. We should also ensure that if anyone caused this, they should be held accountable,” he stated.
Nana Bonsu further criticised the Parliamentary Minority for opposing the vacation courts constituted by Chief Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie. He urged the swift processing of corruption cases to ensure that those found culpable are prosecuted and jailed, while stolen state funds are fully retrieved.
