The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) and the Russian Embassy in Ghana have explored new areas of cooperation to deepen bilateral ties in education, investment, urban development, culture, and people-to-people exchanges.

The discussions took place on Monday, September 7, 2026, when the Russian Ambassador to Ghana, H.E. Andrei Ordash, paid a courtesy call on the Mayor of Accra, Hon. Michael Kpakpo Allotey, and both institutions expressed their commitment to strengthening relations and developing practical partnerships that could deliver mutual benefits.

Speaking during the meeting, Mayor Allotey said Accra had much to learn from the development experience of Russian cities, particularly in areas such as urban planning, infrastructure, technology, and metropolitan administration.

The Mayor was hopeful that Accra could learn best practices and lessons from cities such as Moscow while also sharing its own experiences in local governance and city management.

The Mayor also proposed the establishment of city-to-city relations with selected Russian cities to deepen knowledge exchange, institutional collaboration, and development cooperation.

The Russian Ambassador, who expressed support for the discussion, touched on Accra’s administrative structure, including the creation of various municipalities from the former metropolitan area.

He disclosed that the Embassy was planning activities ahead of the anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Ghana and Russia in January 2028, including a proposed symbolic tree-planting exercise at the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park.

The Ambassador also highlighted Russia’s annual Victory Day celebration on May 9 and proposed possible collaboration on commemorative activities to promote historical understanding and cultural exchange.

On education, the Ambassador disclosed that Russia had increased the number of scholarships offered to Ghanaian students from 120 to 240 this year, adding that out of the 900 applications received, the 240 best candidates were selected.

He also encouraged Ghanaian students interested in studying in Russia to begin preparations early for the next scholarship cycle, announcing that a similar number of opportunities were expected to be made available.

The Ambassador also announced that the upcoming third Russia-Africa Summit in Moscow was expected to create additional opportunities for cooperation in education, trade, investment, and other areas of development.

He encouraged direct engagement between Ghanaian and Russian businesses, stressing that Russia was interested in supporting African countries to strengthen their own production and operational value chains.
