President John Dramani Mahama has inspected five ongoing Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) projects at Han Senior High School (SHS) as part of his #ResettingGhana tour of the Upper West Region.
The infrastructure drive includes new boys’ and girls’ dormitories designed to formally upgrade Han SHS from a community day school into a boarding institution once construction completes.
Addressing school authorities and community members during the visit, the President highlighted a policy shift regarding senior high school placement. Under the realigned model, the community day school concept will focus on densely populated urban areas where students can easily commute. Conversely, institutions in rural areas with expansive catchment zones—such as Han SHS—are being converted into boarding facilities to alleviate daily travel burdens for students.
President Mahama further revealed that the government is building 16 brand-new senior high schools nationwide alongside expanding existing facilities. Supported by a newly approved US$300 million World Bank facility, the initiative aims to eliminate congestion and completely phase out the double-track shift system by the end of 2027.
The President assured the school management that he would return to officially commission the completed GETFund projects, emphasizing that the investments reflect the judicious use of public funds for national development.
