The Mayor of Accra and Chief Executive of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), Hon. Michael Kpakpo Allotey, has handed residents and businesses in Bukom a two-day ultimatum to desilt choked gutters and clean their immediate surroundings.
Speaking during a clean-up and decongestion exercise in the enclave, the Mayor cautioned that the local assembly will no longer tolerate unsanitary practices, emphasizing that individuals must take responsibility for their hygiene rather than pointing fingers at the state.
“We’ve been doing announcement for two days to tell them to clear their areas, clear their gutters, clear their environments,” the Mayor stated. “You cannot live in a community and… when you cook around the gutter, eat around the gutter and when you are sick you blame government. No, it’s not right.”
While highlighting that the AMA has consistently engaged the community to comply willingly, Hon. Allotey signaled a swift shift toward strict enforcement once the grace period expires.
“So we are pleading with them they should listen to what the mayor is saying, the mayor means good for them. But when they don’t listen after two days, I’m going to come in very hard and make sure I clear them,” he warned.
Beyond the environmental drive, Hon. Allotey outlined measures to reintroduce the traditional town council system while driving youth employment across the capital, framing these initiatives under President John Dramani Mahama’s broader “reset” agenda.
“Your Excellency John Dramani Mahama is resetting everywhere. You can see as I speak to you, the whole Ghana has turned to a construction site,” he observed.
To sustain this agenda, the Assembly is actively recruiting field personnel, including city guards, sanitation inspectors, and revenue officers, to bolster its daily operations.
“I’m talking to the youth that there’s jobs at AMA, they should come we employ them. We want to employ more task forces, sanitation officers, revenue collectors, city guards. So there are more opportunities at the AMA,” the Mayor urged.
He further noted that starting monthly salaries at the Assembly begin at no less than GH¢1,000, calling it a viable dynamic for young people within the metropolis who can commute to work on foot.
