Commissioning the third phase of the Zonda Tec Ghana Assembly Plant in Tema on Tuesday, September 15, President John Dramani Mahama outlined major industrial expansion plans alongside upcoming energy regulations for electric vehicles.

During his address, President Mahama highlighted that Zonda Tec’s investment will almost double its direct workforce and spur job growth nationwide.

“The investment we are celebrating today will significantly expand employment opportunities. It is expected to almost double direct employment at Zonda Tec while creating approximately 1,000 additional indirect jobs across logistics, maintenance, component supply, distribution and other supporting industries,” he said.

Beyond factory expansion, he praised the establishment of the Zonda Tec Foundation—which offers scholarships for Ghanaians to study automotive manufacturing in China—and commended the company’s new academy dedicated to technical skills training for local youth.

Transitioning to sustainable transportation, the President revealed that the Ministry of Energy and Green Transitions is finalizing a comprehensive EV policy to submit to Cabinet. The framework aims to regulate charging infrastructure locations to protect the national power grid from strain and encourage solar-powered charging alternatives.

“A few people have started establishing charging stations. If this is not regulated, it could lead to imbalances in our energy system.”

“Because if we put too many charging stations in one place without taking note of the transformer and the substation that feed those charging stations, it can imbalance the electricity supply in that area.”
