The Ghana Police Service has arrested 36 suspects in connection with the lynching of a police officer at Gindabour in the Sawla District of the Savannah Region.

The deceased officer, identified as General Constable Redeemer Owusu, was murdered by an angry mob from the community during a highway patrol operation.

According to a press statement released by the Savannah Regional Police Command and signed by the Regional Commander, DCOP David K. Agyemang, the incident occurred on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, along the Gindabour to Kenkyen community road.

“A motorbike rider who was approaching their location immediately diverted into the bush when he saw the police vehicle,” the police statement noted.

Suspecting foul play, the patrol team attempted to intercept the rider from a different direction but found him unconscious along the bush track.

The officers picked up the individual to transport him to a nearby hospital for medical attention, but he died en route.

Following news of the rider’s death, a mob from the community mounted a retaliatory attack on the patrol team, killing General Constable Redeemer Owusu, injuring several other officers, and causing significant damage to the police operational vehicle.

The bodies of both the deceased police officer and the motor rider have since been deposited at the Damongo Morgue for preservation and autopsy.

The police administration disclosed that the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) has deployed dedicated intelligence teams and investigators to assist local commands in bringing all perpetrators to justice.

Reinforcement units from Damongo, Bole, Sawla, Tuna, and Kalba, together with the Regional Intelligence Team, have been stationed in the area to restore order and maintain security.

“All 36 suspects are in police custody, assisting investigations, and will be put before court,” the statement added.

The Regional Command condemned the attack on its officers, emphasizing that “the Command highly condemns the attack on its officers and will ensure the perpetrators are made to face the full rigours of the law.”
