President John Dramani Mahama has convened an emergency high-level security meeting at the Flagstaff House to address the recent trafficking of illicit drugs through Ghana’s ports.
During the briefing, security chiefs informed the President that ten individuals have been arrested and are currently in custody to assist with ongoing investigations. Among those detained are four officers from the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA).
The meeting undertook a comprehensive review of existing security infrastructure and operational protocols at the country’s ports of entry, highlighting critical vulnerabilities that allowed the illicit shipments to pass through undetected.
Dissatisfied with current measures, President Mahama ordered the immediate creation of an inter-agency task force. The body has been given a two-week deadline to present a comprehensive strategy aimed at tightening security, plugging loopholes, and preventing Ghana’s borders from being used as transit routes for international drug cartels.
Government sources indicate that further arrests have not been ruled out as intelligence agencies expand their probe into the network.
