The Fisheries Commission, backed by the Global Fisheries and Resilience Action (GFRA), has inaugurated the Small Pelagic Co-Management Committees (SPCCs) at its Accra Conference Room.

The initiative aims to drive participatory and science-informed governance of Ghana’s small pelagic fisheries.

Formed under the Fisheries and Aquaculture Act, 2025 (Act 1146) and structured by the Commission’s Co-Management framework, the committees give key industry players a direct role in implementing, monitoring, and reviewing management actions.

Operating at regional and national tiers, the SPCCs focus on streamlining local action planning, gathering stakeholder feedback, boosting communication, and encouraging voluntary compliance across the sector.

The move marks a major step toward building an inclusive, accountable, and sustainable fisheries framework where local communities directly contribute to safeguarding small pelagic stocks.
