Retirees of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital are slated to enjoy free healthcare under the facility’s Medicare programme as part of new measures introduced by management to honor former employees for their years of dedicated service.
The Chief Executive of the hospital, Dr Yakubu Seidu Adam, announced the initiative during a consultative meeting between members of the Central Management and the leadership of the Korle Bu Pensioners Association.
Speaking at the engagement, Dr Adam emphasized that retired workers remain an integral part of the Korle Bu community due to their immense contribution to the hospital’s growth. He noted that absorbing pensioners into the Medicare scheme is a practical way for management to express gratitude and ensure former staff feel continually supported by the institution.
Dr Adam also seized the opportunity to urge executive members of the association to advise pensioners who are still occupying hospital accommodation to vacate the premises upon the expiry of their approved grace period.
Supporting the Chief Executive, the Director of Human Resources, Yehuza Jawula, assured the retirees that his outfit would collaborate with the association to expand its membership base. He revealed that management plans to issue official identification cards to pensioners, allowing them to conveniently access services while establishing their formal identity within the Korle Bu network.
Responding to the management’s gesture, the Chairman of the Korle Bu Pensioners Association, Erasmus Jones, expressed deep gratitude for the inclusion of retirees in the Medicare programme. He, however, appealed to management to broaden the scope of support to cover embalming and mortuary storage fees for deceased members, alongside establishing a relief mechanism for the families of departed retirees.
Formed in 2011, the Korle Bu Pensioners Association currently boasts 199 members.
The management delegation present at the meeting included the Director of Administration, Munir Alhassan; Executive Assistant, Gertrude Kinney; and representatives from the Public Relations Unit. The pensioner executive delegation comprised John Adjei Adjetey, Mr Afful, Simonides Cofie, Nana Baah Acheamfour, Belinda Commey, Elizabeth Thompson, and Alex Arhin.
