The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Akatsi North, Hon. Bless Kodjo Katamani, has expressed deep worry over the poor performance of students in the district in the 2026 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).
Describing the development as “alarming,” the DCE revealed that the single best score he heard from the entire examination results in the area was an aggregate 45.
Speaking at the official commissioning of a newly constructed three-unit classroom block at Nyitawuta, Hon. Katamani warned that such abysmal performance has severely tarnished the image of the district and cannot be allowed to continue.
He explicitly cautioned candidates and younger learners to drastically reduce their engagement in non-academic activities, particularly the excessive use of mobile phones, spending nights at funeral grounds, and getting enticed into premature sexual relationships at the expense of their studies.
“It is deeply distressing to learn that after all the effort, the best score recorded here is aggregate 45,” Hon. Katamani declared. “This alarming output tarnishes the image of Akatsi North. Our children are wasting precious study hours on mobile phones, chasing social events like funerals, and entangling themselves in sexual relationships instead of focusing strictly on their books.”
He reminded the students that the government, the district assembly, and their parents continue to invest huge resources into their schooling, and they must reciprocate those investments through discipline and stellar academic performance.
“The government, your parents, and the district assembly are spending millions to provide modern infrastructure like this classroom block to give you a bright future,” he stressed. “You owe it to yourselves and your families to make full use of these opportunities and make us proud.”
Hon. Katamani subsequently called on all key educational stakeholders — including parents, teachers, traditional leaders, and the students themselves — to urgently collaborate to reverse the worrying trend and write a better narrative for education in the district.
