Police in the Kumasi Metropolis of the Ashanti Region have launched an investigation following the theft of a five-month-old baby boy at the Asafo Market.
The victim, identified as Akwasi Banahene, was snatched at the market’s Cape Coast Bus Terminal on Saturday, September 19, 2026.
The infant’s uncle, Mr Osei Kuffour, revealed the distressing details during an interview on Rainbow Radio’s flagship news programme, Nyankonton Mu Nsem. He explained that the child’s mother, a local food vendor, was preparing meals around 5:00 am when the incident occurred.
According to Mr Kuffour, the mother had laid the sleeping infant down just outside her shop to attend to her work. An unfamiliar woman, estimated to be between 37 and 40 years old, was noticed sitting nearby moments before the disappearance.
“When the mother briefly stepped away to grab an item and turned back, both her child and the strange woman had vanished,” Mr Kuffour recounted.
The distraught family has formally reported the matter to the local police service and is appealing to members of the general public for any information that could lead to the safe recovery of little Akwasi Banahene.
